NASA Glenn’s Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) is one of the world’s largest refrigerated wind tunnels dedicated to the study of aircraft icing. In the facility, natural icing conditions are simulated to test and study the effects of in-flight icing on actual full-sized aircraft components as well as models of aircraft, including helicopters. The IRT can simulate flying conditions with airspeeds ranging from 50-350 knots and air temperatures as low as -40˚ F.
